X-Pro 1 in 2019

The love of the essential

I’ve been shooting with Fujifilm cameras for 5 years now. My entire Canon equipment was getting obsolete with the purchase of the Fujifilm X-T1.

Since time, I have always kept an eye on the Fujifilm X-Pro1. Rangefinder was never my cup of tea.

Sure, Leica’s and the X-Pro Series are looking nice, but a larger viewfinder and the optics with a Pentaprism was more important to me.

But then I got an X-Pro 1 cheap and well preserved in front of the gun and this opportunity has catapulted me again in the seventh photography heaven.

Unusual and at the same time intuitive, the X-Pro 1 fascinated me with its charm.

It’s the feeling with which you photograph what makes the X-Pro 1 what it is.
A manual decelerating creatively animating camera.

Of course, compared to the X-T2, my main camera, you have to do without some amenities, such as the serial boost with 14 fps, the very larger EVF, AF points, autofocus speed and much more.

Nevertheless, the X-Pro 1 manages to convey a certain wow feeling to anyone who holds it in their hands. And that’s exactly what makes the X-Pro 1 the perfect second camera for me.

Enough with the enthusiasm, let´s go to the hard facts.

The 16 MP Sensor is perfect for my editorial, portrait, travel and street photography. Big photos up to A3 work wonderfully in print. For magazines which mostly use A4 in print, the quality is great.

The X-Trans 1 sensor provides a wonderful color rendering, which is especially noticeable in JPEG’s SOOC.

Slooooow. Even with the new Fujicron f2.0 lenses. But acceptable.

ISO is no problem up to ISO1200. Beyond that to 3200 is still acceptable. After 3200 it stops being good.

The EVF is rather poor compared to modern mirrorless cameras. But still good to use.
The OVF is not used by me.

With one charge you can make about 200-300 pictures.

Slow and less intuitive than the modern Fuji menus. But good to use.

How much is the X-Pro 1?
I got a real bargain on eBay. With patience and three months of search, I get it for 180 €.
The only flaw is the automatic eye sensor detection, which is a known error in the X-Pro 1 and works only in bright sunlight.

Despite the „negative“ facts, compared to modern cameras, the X-Pro 1 has a magic that captivates me and never lets go.

Is the Fujifilm X-Pro 1 still a good camera in 2019?
Yes, definitely! In my opinion the best second camera.
